Though not a part of the World Rally Championship in 1995, the Rally Finland (aka the 1000 Lakes Rally) was a grueling crucible for the rally world's factory teams and their best drivers, and it would prove a critical step towards Tommi Makinen's utter dominance of rallying in the late 1990s. Piloting his signature Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, Makinen and co-driver Seppo Harjanne would score a crushing victory over rival Marcus Gronholm's Toyota by a margin of over nine minutes. This win, his third in a row, would point the way toward four consecutive WRC driver's championships from 1996 through 1999.
